Joe has created hundreds of fights, stunts and action sequences, from fistfights and duels to brawls and battles, on stage and on screen.


Recent work includes productions of Shakespeare in Love (Capital Repertory Theatre) and Treasure Island (Fulton Theatre), the Off-Broadway premiers of Max Vernon's The View Upstairs and Billy Porter's While I Yet Live, as well as the immersive guerrilla folk-opera Counting Sheep.  On Broadway, Joe served as fight director for Eric Simonson’s Bronx Bombers.  He also staged the violence for the New York premieres of Adam Rapp’s Essential Self-Defense, Sara Ruhl’s Dead Man’s Cell Phone, and the U.S. premier of Ethel Smyth's 1906 opera The Wreckers.  His work has been seen at Playwrights Horizons, Irish Repertory Theatre, Primary Stages, New York Theatre Workshop, Ensemble Studio Theatre, New Repertory Theatre, Virginia Shakespeare Festival, Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre, abroad at the Shanghai International Experimental Theatre Festival and on tour with the National Shakespeare Company. 

As a stunt coordinator, Joe worked on the feature film The Depths (starring Michael Rispoli) and served as stunt coordinator and sword master for the fantasy epic Tower of Silence. Other credits include the films Lifted and A - Alike, which gained awards from the DGA and the National Board of Review.

Joe holds the rank of Certified Fight Director with both the ​Society of American Fight Directors and Fight Directors Canada.  He is a regular contributor to the SAFD journal The Fight Master through his column, Fight Matters.

Joe  heads the stage combat program at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City.  Since 1995 he has been the managing director of Swordplay, a NYC based company that provides instruction in safe and effective stage combat techniques to professional actors.  He is a proud member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC).
